抗生物質は、微生物が産生する、他の微生物や細胞に作用してその発育などを抑制する作用を持つ物質のことである。これまでに200種類以上の抗生物質が細菌感染症の治療と予防に広く使用されている。細菌に対して作用する抗菌薬として使用されるのみならず、真菌や寄生虫、腫瘍に対して用いられることもある。

抗生物質は古来より使用されてきた。複数の文明がカビなどを感染症の治療に使用しており、古代エジプト、ヌビア、ギリシャなどでその記録が残されている。20世紀の初頭にポール・エーリッヒらが合成抗菌薬を開発したことで選択毒性に基づく感染症の化学療法という概念がもたらされる。そして、1928年にはアレクサンダー・フレミングが世界初の抗生物質であるペニシリンを発見、ハワード・フローリーとエルンスト・ボリス・チェーンの研究により大量生産が可能になったことで普及が進んだ
